Inconel 718 is a precipitation hardening nickel based superalloy with excellent high temperature corrosion resistance. In the commonly used aerospace industry, Inconel 718 provides excellent mechanical strength and ductility at elevated temperatures up to 704oc / 1300of. It is essentially nonmagnetic.


Nickel based superalloy 718 has good oxidation resistance and other types of corrosion resistance in space jet engine and land-based gas turbine applications. It is ideal for applications requiring excellent creep and stress corrosion cracking resistance (up to 982oc or 1800of). 718 Alloy can completely prevent pitting and crevice corrosion in sulfide, chloride, carbon dioxide and other harsh environments.


Inconel 718 Alloy is usually used in the form of Inconel 718 welding wire, Inconel 718 rod and Inconel 718 plate.

Inconel 718 processing:

Inconel 718 has good impact performance even at extremely low temperatures of - 423of or - 253oc. It is easy to weld without toughening or cracking. It can easily work and age harden. 718 Alloy is welded in the solution annealed state, but it can be aged and cold worked or cold worked and aged.


The aging of Inconel 718 will harden during heat treatment. It has austenite grain structure in a wide temperature range. Different solid solution and aging treatments were used to enhance the short-term or long-term mechanical properties of the alloy.


Inconel 718 processing:

The forming and machining of Inconel 718 complicates conventional methods due to its rapid work hardening. After the initial machining, work hardening will deform the material or tool in the subsequent machining process. Therefore, the alloy 718 is processed with a hostile and slightly cutting hard tool, thereby reducing the number of passes required. It finally provides a method of processing materials in solution form, which only requires that the last step be followed after age hardening. Plate cutting is usually performed by using a water jet. Selective laser melting process is another common method for producing 718 Alloy Parts.


718 Alloy Welding:

The welding of alloy 718, especially in HAZ (heat affected zone), faces challenges due to the risk of alloy element fracture and microstructure segregation. It is desirable to weld by gas tungsten arc welding and electron beam welding.
